The city of joy's charm is felt in it's unparallel adornment during the annual festivities of Durga Puja in the month of October, expressed through the display of aesthetic pandals and deities. Sammilani Durga Puja Committe of Bhowanipore for their 61st year of Puja celebrations this year, attempts to recreate the phenomenon of Bengali cinema as a tribute to it’s completion of 101 years. Sammilani attempts to revive the fading ‘Cinema Para’ culture of South Kolkata that ranges from Bishop Lefroy Road, where the auteur Satyajit Ray lived, to the lanes of Bhowanipore where legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen resided. Cinema Para’s authenticity is disappearing among the era of multiplexes and it is the conservation of this identity that Sammilani aims to achieve. The bright posters and paintings on the doors and walls of the area and the clapboard inspired pandal entry gate are some of the visual treats awaited for in their Puja. The visitors can treat themselves to day long activities like full day screenings of iconic Bengali movies, cinema quizzes and dart games inspired by the famous knife throw scene from Satyajit Ray’s iconic movie “Joy Baba Felunath”. The deity of the pandal will also be a replica from the idol of Ray’s movie. Sandip Ray in the foreword of the book “A Directory For Bengali Cinema” writes, “Films have a proper resting place in our memories. But one cannot help but mourn the loss of more direct access to experience.” This avant garde prepared by the artists of Sammilani, is an urban rejuvenation of the era of Bengali cinema; a tribute to all those associated with films over the years.Their tributes are extended to famous cinematographer, Late Somak Mukherjee who was also an active member of the Puja Committee and it’s their authentic attempt of commemoration that makes their Puja pandal so very special. Films provide escapades into the world of dreams. Therefore, this year, while we hop from one pandal to another, we must pay our greetings to the Cinema Para of Kolkata created by the Sammilani Durga Puja Committe of Bhowanipore, where we will relive the experience of 101 years of Bengali cinema through their amalgamation of classical and modern art culture.
